I am Benji Overcash, a 24-year-old M.A. student at Asbury Theological Seminary, with my degree focus being in Biblical Studies. I plan to pursue another Masters degree and a Ph.D. in New Testament.

My primary research interests are: the socio-cultural milieu out of which Christianity and the New Testament emerged, and the interfaces between the earliest Christians and the Greco-Roman and Jewish cultures; sectarian subsets of Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity; the historical Jesus; the Gospels; and Johannine literature.

Clearly, the Bible is an important part of my life. I believe it to be the special revelation of the living God, conveyed through pen and page. The Psalmist said of the gods of the nations, “They have mouths but cannot speak” (Ps 115:5). But the God of the Bible is the God who speaks: “In the beginning … God said” (Gen 1:1, 3); “In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1).

Even before there was a Bible, there was the Word of God. But it is in the Bible that we have the Word of God recorded, and it is the Bible that bears the salvific story of “the Word [who] became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). As such, it warrants careful study and interpretation. I intend for this blog to be an expression of that belief. From time to time, I may discuss other things, too. Please join me.
